Affect on Automaticity

DEFINITION:  "Automaticity is the ability to effortlessly complete everyday tasks with low interference of other simultaneous activities and without conscious thought to step-by-step process. When the brain recognizes familiar tasks it processes the information and applies the correct rules to the procedure in order to reduce the demand on the working memory and allow for higher order processing of information."

The Encyclopedia of Educational Technology

EFFECT:  "Ten years ago, researchers demonstrated that subliminal messages do indeed affect human cognition — and showed the limits of that influence [1]. The study demonstrated that, to have an effect on a person’s decision, the subliminal message had to be received very, very soon before that decision (a tenth of a second or less), and the person had to be forced to make the decision very quickly. Moreover, there was no memory trace detectable, indicating no permanent record was stored in memory"

(This is not subliminal persuasion or subliminal messaging as most people understand it...)

WHAT THIS MEANS:  Any below-the-range-of-awareness/below-the-absolute-threshhold acoustic effect can influence split-second decision-making.  Used in a military setting, it could negatively affect or enhance performance.

Affect on Impulsivity

DEFINITION:  Inclined to act on impulse rather than thought.  Region of the brain effected: ventral striatum, a core component of the brain's reward circuitry.

EFFECT:   Increased levels of mild impulsivity (on specific occasions, engaging in bingeing, overshopping, gambling etc...).  Generally mentioned in passing by victims, not immediately recognized as a symptom, but is obvious enough to be noticeable (generally because the behavior is not normal for the victim and is mildly exaggerated).  Used in a military setting, it could have a negative affect on performance.

Affect on Pattern Recognition

DEFINITION:  Classification of images, objects, ideas etc...into predetermined categories.  Region of the brain effected: right frontal lobe, parietal lobe.

EFFECT:  The affect on victims can be severe.  Usually hyperawareness of pattern recognition.  Often a temporary phase, it plays a large role in the phenomenon of media interactivity and the use of scripts (see Misinformation).  Generally combined with a mild fight or flight response (mild anxiety--region of the brain effected--amygdala) it can be very difficult to persuade the victim that the patterns are (in almost every case) actually cognitive manipulation.  Used in a military setting, it could aid tremedously in enemy detection.  Pattern recognition is also used  in machine learning.
